Since the beginnings of art there has been figure painting in endless varieties from symbols (hands and stick figures) to fleshed out versions. This involves almost the entire history of art. It's inescapable not to address that history when working with this motif. Figures are portraits in various contexts and psychological states. They are also compositional challenges. They are about the language of painting as well as a dialog with the model or sitter.
